Summary
The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) classification system offers more detailed information and the ability to expand specificity and clinical information in order to capture advancements in clinical medicine.
The system is not yet implemented in Medicare’s fee-for-service claims processes, so no action is needed at this time.
ICD-10 consists of the following two parts:
• ICD-10-CM -- The diagnosis classification system was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for use in all United States (U.S.) health care treatment settings.
• ICD-10-PCS -- The procedure classification system was developed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for use in the U.S. for inpatient hospital settings only.
